Dense Foam resin base |
Those of you that are familiar with Just Plane Stuff know that they are renown for their high quality resin bases. Recently they have embarked on a modification of their bases. They use a resin foam with a hard resin upper surface and include an edging in the mold. This provides several benefits. One is that the item is much lighter than solid resin, it is also much more rigid that solid resin and won't warp. A final benefit is that by molding an edging on the base, there is no need to go through the considerable work and hassle of finding a suitable framework for the resin. If the solid resin bases are not mounted on a firm backing, they will eventually warp. It is the nature of the beast.
Their first release using this new procedure was a WWII 1/48 Flight deck section reviewed here a few months back. This one is for those who MUST have a base for their new Hasegawa 1/32 Bf-109G-6 and is a Luftwaffe wooden hardstand. It is molded to the same exacting standards of the earlier base, but is much larger, measuring approximately 13 by 15 inches. In fact, it was mailed in a large pizza box! Unlike the earlier base, this one has been given an overall coating of light brown, which will provide a super basis on which to do the wood staining and earth colors. They are not sure if this will be standard or not as this base is a test shot. In the final analysis, this is a much needed accessory and one that will surely be of great value to the large scale Luftwaffe kit builder. Look for a painting article on this base in the near future.
