HISTORY |
For those of you who have not been paying attention, the C-130, which first flew in the very early 1950s, has been in continuous production since then. It has been constantly upgraded with improved engines and other systems, but the overall look of the aircraft has remained pretty much the same. Despite newer turbofan powered transports, the C-130 remains a viable cargo plane for dozens of air arms and civilian operators with even some of the oldest airframes still providing useful service.
THE KIT |
Minicraft has produced kits of all the different variants and while
the company is out of business, these are still fairly easy to
locate. Draw Decal is offering white kits for a very reasonable
price and these come with instructions, but without decals. In a
package deal, you can get the bagged kit with a choice of decals for
a most reasonable price and considering that Minicraft decals were
not exactly the best around, this is a pretty good deal.
The kit molding is quite good with the now normal recessed panel
lines we have come to expect from kits. This one can be built as
either an A/B, E, or J with different props and engines provided in
the kit. The kit also comes with different 'beaver tails' to match
the variant being modeled. There is no cockpit and while the rear
ramp assembly can be modeled open, there isn't anything in the rear
to see other than the cargo floor.
On the wings, the holes for the two underwing fuel tanks per side
are already opened so if the aircraft you are modeling has less than
the full load, the unwanted openings will need to be filled. While
no nose weight is indicated, I'd put some in there just to be sure.
The kit can be built with gear up or gear down, however, there is no
display stand, unlike the actual Minicraft boxed version.
Instructions are well drawn and provide generic color info. As
mentioned, Draw Decal offers a number of sheets for this kit and
there are others out there as well, so if you are a C-130 fan, this
is a very good deal.
CONCLUSIONS |
For most of us, 1/144 is a perfect scale for large aircraft like this. It has the benefit of not taking up a lot of space and encourages building more than one. I really like how the wings and tailplanes slot into the fuselage and look forward to actually building one of these.
