HISTORY

Weighing in at 71.7 tonnes, the German Jagdtiger tank destroyer was definitely the super heavyweight of WWII armored vehicles. Although it was armed with a lethal 12.8cm PaK 44 L/55 gun, the Jagdtiger’s enormous bulk impacted severely on its mobility, meaning it could only hope to reach a maximum speed of 34km/h at best. The Sd.Kfz. 186 Jagdtiger entered service in late 1944 and it served on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, with around 80 or so being produced. The first 11 Jagdtigers manufactured were based on a Porsche suspension system (using a paired external torsion bar suspension with eight single road wheels).

THE KIT

A few years back, Dragon did the Henschel Jagdtiger and now it is time for the Porsche version. A small kit this is not with nearly 900 parts. It is listed as being for a skilled modeler and so it is. The individual track links undoubtedly make up for much of the parts count. There is also a photo etch fret for things like engine intake screens, an aluminum barrel and metal tow hooks. All the external bits are separate and that includes the tools and clamps. A section of wire for the tow cables and many slide molded details are part of the package.

The casting detail on the fighting compartment and gun mantlet are superbly executed. So are the various weld seams that are part of the usual high quality molding for which Dragon has become famous. A detailed main gun and mount are included, which can be seen through the rear doors, that one can build in the open position should one wish.

Instructions are very well illustrated with the usual Gunze and Model Master paint references. Markings on these vehicles are generally limited to insignia and vehicle numbers. Two markings options are provided. One is an overall Panzer Yellow vehicle as shown on the box art and the other has green and brown patches. Both are from PzJg Abt 653 in 1945.

CONCLUSIONS

I've had the Henschel version on my 'to do' pile for quite some time but have been a bit intimidated by the parts count. This one is also like that, but for those who want to have a most impressive model of this famous German vehicle, this one should be high on your 'want' list.
