Academy 1/48 kit

Scott Van Aken

I've had this set for quite a while, but have not reviewed it. This set is for the 1/48 Academy F-86F, a kit that many think is still one of the best. I've built it and have to say that I like it quite a bit. What's more, it is still available both new and on the second hand market. I often see these for $15.00 or so.

The set is fairly comprehensive and pre-dates the color versions. It provides a new seat, except for the back which you have to salvage from the kit part. It also replaces the side consoles and you have to cut off the old ones to use it. To use the new instrument panel, the kit's detail has to be sanded away. Similar surgery has to be done to use the area behind the cockpit as you keep the lumps, but put them on the new p.e. part along with some other bits. For the outside there are new drop tank fins with endplates, machine gun jackets and nose gear door hinges.

I'm not sure how many of these parts most modelers will use, but they are there if you want to put forth the effort.
