Well after the USAF had entered the jet age, the C-47 continued to be operated by the US military. It was one of those planes that was just so useful that it was difficult to send them to the boneyard. It seemed as if every major command had at least one. They were used as station or unit hacks. Their job was to ferry pilots, parts, crew and mail. They were also used when 'the general' needed a quick flight to some other base to play golf for a weekend with his general buddies. Eventually, even the need for the C-47 went away when there were other planes to take its place and many of them were either sold to 'friendly' countries or sold off to civilian operators.
This sheet contains two different C-47s. Your only choice of kit is the very large Monogram kit. This kit has been made in both DC-3 and C-47 versions so be sure you get the cargo version as the airliner kit doesn't have the cargo door.
First plane is from the 50th TFW at Hahn AB, Germany in 1963. The sheet states it is overall 16440 light gull grey, but I think it is probably 16473 ADC grey as the USAF didn't generally use Navy colors on its aircraft. The plane has a white top and bare metal engine cowlings (polished, of course). Control surfaces are fabric so would have been in aluminum paint.
The other option is from the 47th Base Wing Flight at Sculthorpe, England, also in 1963. This one is overall bare metal with aluminum painted control surfaces. A small section of the fin and the rudder trim tab are in yellow. You'll note that both have the long carb intake scoops and the abbreviated tail cone. One thing for sure, it will make a BIG model.
