Once more, Caracal Models helps out modelers by producing a sheet that has been on the list of many for a number of years. This is the first of at least two sheets on the EC-121 Warning Star. The only kit of this aircraft was done by Heller many years ago. It is a raised panel line kit typical of the 1970s and while generally quite accurate, I've been told that the engine cowlings are in need of a bit of work. Not sure if there have ever been aftermarket for this, but if so, they would be worth seeking.

But back to the sheet. This one covers two USAF and two Navy aircraft. The USAF birds are painted in overall ADC Grey (FS 16473), so that should appeal to those who hate bare metal finishes. The USN versions are mostly Engine Grey (FS 36081) with some planes having white tops to help reduce the interior temperatures.

The first option is an EC-121T from the 79 AEWC that was based at Homestead AFB in 1978. This and the next option are both Air Force Reserve units. As a trainer version, this one does not have an upper radome. It is also the last EC-121 to leave Keflavik, Iceland where there was a constant presence of AWACS aircraft until the base was turned over to Iceland in the late 1990s. As such it has a zap on the rudder and fin from the 57 FIS, which was the locally based interceptor squadron.

Next a standard EC-121T, also from the 79 AEWC at Homestead AFB during 1978. This one has the upper radome attached.

The first of two Navy EC-121Ps is an overall Engine Grey plane from VW-2 that was based at NAS Argentia in 1962. This one has a white stripe on the upper radome and a white fin tip. It was attached to VW-11.

The final option is a WC-121N named 'Draggin Lady' and was attached to VW-1 based at Agana, Guam in 1967. It has a white upper fuselage and upper radome. This was NOT a plane that was eventually attached to VQ-1. While it is true that VQ-1 was originally det A of VW-1, that unit was formed well before this date and operated P4Ms before getting its EC-121Ms. VW squadrons were generally weather recon units and were quite extensive before the days of satellite weather data recording systems.

There are enough markings to do one aircraft, and that includes prop warning stripes, and insignia as well as the usual USAF logos. As a note, I've darkened the image of the sheet so you can more easily see the white bits.

In all, it is an excellent sheet and should be most welcome for many who have waited for a nice set of markings for their Heller kit.
