Caracal Models CD 144013: KC-97 Stratofreighter

Units: See review

Scott Van Aken

This particular Caracal Models sheet is for the Minicraft 1/144 KC-97 kit. This kit is an L version that has the additional jet pods on it so it can refuel jets without having tanker be in a shallow dive to keep up speed. For those types that don't use the jets or even the boom system, it is a simple task to leave these off and fill any holes.

The vast majority of these planes are ANG KC-97Ls. These are all painted pretty much the same so I've shortened the instruction sheet images to leave off all but a single example that is in that particular scheme. Note that these planes had a black section of the underside with the rest in ADC Grey. They also had white over the cockpit roof to help alleviate some of the heat issues.

Here is what is included on the sheet:

KC-97L 52-0833, Ohio Air National Guard

KC-97L 52-0905, Wisconsin Air National Guard

KC-97L 53-0244, Arizona Air National Guard

KC-97L 52-0901, Illinois Air National Guard

KC-97L 53-0310, Texas Air National Guard

KC-97L 53-0307, Missouri Air National Guard

HC-97G 53-0165, 305th Air Reserve Rescue Squadron

C-97A 49-2603, Oklahoma Air National Guard

C-97A 49-2601, New York Air National Guard

KC-97G 53-0166, Strategic Air Command

The sheet is superbly printed by Cartograf and you are provided enough common markings for one plane. If you wish to do others, then you can use kit supplied decals. A note to the more frugal modeler. If you are going to do the KC-97G or C-97A version, then boxings of these variants are quite a bit less expensive than the more recent KC-97L version.
