HISTORY

For 1964, the Impala was restyled to a more rounded, softer look. The signature taillight assembly had an "upside-down U" shaped aluminum trim strip above the taillights, but the individual lights were surrounded by a body-colored panel. The 409 cu in (6.7 L) V8 engine returned as the big-block option, as well as dual four-barrel (four-choke) Carter AFB carburetors, which produced 425 bhp (431 PS; 317 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 425 lb⋅ft (576 N⋅m) at 4,200 rpm of torque. SS models continued to feature the engine-turned aluminum trim. Rooflines were carried over from 1963 unchanged. Back-up lights were standard.

All full-size 1964 Chevrolet station wagons received small rectangular taillight lenses mounted vertically, one for each side of the car.

The Impala Super Sport became its own series this year instead of an option package. The 1964 Impala was the fourth and last year of the third generation Impala

The 1964 model year is a staple of lowrider culture, and it is commonly mentioned in West Coast hip hop lyrics.

THE KIT
This was a kit I won as a raffle prize at the recent IPMS Gateway show. The date on the kit box is 2017, but I'm pretty sure this is a reissue of an earlier boxing. Scalemates doesn't seem to know when the kit was originally released, but it was not the first time a 1964 Impala has been kitted as SMP did one back in the 1960s. It has also been released by AMT and others.

This kit has parts in five sealed bags. Three of them (main kit, chrome sprue, and clear sprue) are for the base car. The other two (chrome sprue and an additional plastic sprue) are for the low rider. There are also two sprues of rubber/vinyl tires with one set being larger than the other. Overall molding is quite good and I didn't see any flash.

Throughout the build one has to pay attention to the instructions as there are many deviations from stock if building the low rider. For instance, you have optional carburetors for the engine, three different heights of springs, different wheels/tires, and the ability to put a sound system in the trunk. Yes, the trunk. Unlike many car kits this one not only has an opening hood, but an opening trunk as well.

The rest of the kit is quite standard for more modern car kits. Full engine, nicely detailed interior that includes a clear piece to go into the dash panel in front of the speedometer, a nicely detailed suspension and separate dual exhaust. This latter feature will make it so much easier to paint than having it molded into the chassis as is common with older kits.

Instructions are quite well done with a generic painting guide. In fact, I dare say one will spend as much time in painting as in actual assembly. The fairly large decal sheet includes instrument decals, license plate decals and the rather cool looking graphics as shown on the box art. No overall color is suggested so you can use pretty much anything you like. I should also mention that the white tire trim is provided on the sheet and should work well.
CONCLUSIONS

Though I'm not much of a car builder, I have seen this kit built at shows and the results I've seen are quite impressive. The kit provides a lot of detail right from the box and those who like to add more will surely find this one to their liking.
