HISTORY

The Porsche 935 is a race car that was developed and manufactured by German automaker Porsche. Introduced in 1976 as the factory racing version of the 911 (930) Turbo and prepared for FIA-Group 5 rules, it was an evolution of the Carrera RSR 2.1 turbo prototype, the second place overall finisher in the 1974 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Beginning with the 1977 season, Porsche offered the 935 to customers entering the World Championship for Makes, in the IMSA GT Championship and in the German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM). The 935 went on to win the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans overall, and other major endurance races, including Sebring, Daytona, and the 1,000 km Nürburgring. Of the 370 races it was entered, it won 123.

THE KIT

A way to get youngsters interested in scale models, the snap kit is a perfect introduction to the hobby. These kits require no glue and often they don't require painting either. Most can have them go from parts in the box to a completed kit in less than an hour. However, these kits tend towards being quite basic and often inaccurate in details in order to be quick to build. For most youngsters, this is not an issue and it provides a quick toy with the satisfaction that comes from actually building something with their hands.

As you might guess, this kit is not exactly like any of the Porsche 935s produced as it has a number of shape and detail differences. About the closest it comes is to the 935/77, an early variant. The kit is molded in orange, and black with a small chrome sprue and a single clear widow piece.

The black floor pan includes the front axle. An engine assembly uses a couple of the chrome pieces and includes the rear axle. For the interior there is a rudimentary roll bar, two seats, an instrument panel and a chrome steering wheel. All four wheels are hard plastic and have chrome inserts. A separate engine cover allows one to display the engine.

Instructions are quite basic and provide no color information. A small decal sheet provides the scheme as shown on the box art. Some detail painting can add to the finished car if the builder wants to take the time to do a bit of research as most of the cooling intakes/exhaust are not represented.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, it does what it is supposed to and should provide any youngster with an enjoyable experience. I had bought this kit many years ago in hopes of using it for a slot car body, but shortly after purchase, several slot car manufacturers came out with much more detailed cars so this one has been languishing on the shelves.
