HISTORY

The fourth-generation Chevrolet Impala is a full-size automobile produced by Chevrolet for the 1965 through 1970 model years. The 1965 Impala was all new, while the 1967 and 1969 models featured new bodies on the same redesigned perimeter frame introduced on the 1965 models. All Impalas of this generation received annual facelifts as well, distinguishing each model year. Throughout the early 1960s, Chevrolet's basic body designs became increasingly subtle, while the bright trim that was part of the Impala package added more than a touch of luxury to the look. The same pattern was followed in the interiors, where the best materials and equipment Chevrolet had to offer were displayed. In short, the Impala was on its way to becoming a kind of junior-grade Cadillac, which, for both the company and its customers, was just fine.

THE KIT

This is one of Monogram's kits that comes in a larger than usual US car box. If you have built any US car kit, then this one will look quite familiar. It is molded in mostly white plastic with a clear sprue, a red sprue for the tail lights, and four rubber/vinyl tires.

There are no options other than different license plates on the small decal sheet. There is just one engine provided and it is a stock 396. Once the engine is built, the front suspension is constructed and attached to the chassis. This is followed by the completed engine, exhaust and the rest of the drive train that includes the rear suspension.

Tires are next and Monogram provides white wall tires. One then moves to the interior which is built up into a subassembly that includes the inner door sections. The last parts of the interior to be assembled are the dash with steering wheel and the firewall. Attention turns to the body and installing the clear bits. The instructions will tell the builder to paint all the detail sections around the clear bits prior to gluing in the clear parts. The last steps involve installing the interior into the body, then attaching the body and wheels to the chassis.

Instructions are well done providing not only the name of all the parts, but also the color in generic terms. There is a small decal sheet with some trim items and choice of Illinois and California licesnse plates. The sheet is probably still good though a tad thick.

CONCLUSIONS

I've seen this kit built before at shows and it really looks like the real thing. It would be wise to carefully look through the instructions and see what chrome parts would probably be better with some or all of the plating removed.
