HISTORY
The NASCAR Truck Series is a pickup truck racing series owned and operated by the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), and is the only series in NASCAR to race production pickup truck-based stock cars. The series is one of three national divisions of NASCAR, ranking as the third tier behind the second-tier NASCAR Xfinity Series and the top level NASCAR Cup Series and is also the youngest NASCAR-sanctioned national racing competition to date. The series started in 1995 and currently features Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota trucks. As the lowest tier in NASCAR's professional series, it is a place where new drivers see if they have the talent to move up to the other series.
THE KIT
Back when NASCAR was a real money maker for US kit makers, AMT did a series from the NASCAR truck series. Specifically a Chevrolet Silverado and this Ford F-150. They may have also done a Dodge, but I don't remember one. I picked up several to build and eventually just used the body of the others for slot cars.
Molded in light grey plastic, the tooling looks fairly nice. There are quite a few parts in this as is typical of any of the period US racing car kits. The kit comes with a full engine so this is not a curbside. Probably the most complex parts of the kit are the suspension and the interior roll cage. Both of these items will take up a fair amount of time to simply clean up the mold seams.
The kit comes
with rubber tires and these along with their wheels are to be carefully glued to
stub axles. An interesting feature is that in the back, there are clear fuel
lines that fit atop a fuel cell piece and all of this is surrounded by a small
cage. The bed of the trucks are covered in sheet metal for aerodynamics, but AMT
has included a separate piece for the area over this that you can remove to show
it.
Instructions are well done and provide generic color information for each part as you will need to paint things as construction moves along. Most of the truck is in a somewhat light yellow with a green nose section. This nose will need to be painted to match the decal. Despite the 30 year age of the decals, they should still be viable. They are fairly thick and are glossy. I don't think anyone does truck decals anymore since NASCAR sent their army of attorneys after small decal makers some 20-25 years ago.
CONCLUSIONS
For those who are building a collection of various types of racing cars, this category should be included. Though it has been decades since the last truck kit was produced, they can still be found on-line and at shows or swap meets.
