Luftwaffe im Focus #19 has arrived after what seems like far too long since the last one, and once again, it is a superb edition with interesting stories and previously unpublished photographs. As usual, the articles and images cover the full gamut of Luftwaffe types including fighters, bombers, experimental types, and ground attack. There is also a pilot's story and a closer look at a specific aircraft.
While I find the entire edition to be fascinating, there were a few stories that really stuck with me. One was on a rear facing flamethrower installation for bombers that was designed to spew hot oil on the windscreen of following fighters or to soot up their canopies so they could not see. It was used in combat and apparently will at least one success in knocking down an attacking fighter. Another most interesting article was on the Savoia Staffel. The Germans actually ordered new SM.82s to operate in support of forces in North Africa and later used them in the southern front until it became impossible to get parts.
As always, there are great color images and this one is no exception with, among others, some superb images of Rumanian aircraft. It turns out that what were thought were RLM shade yellow noses on their 109Es was actually closer to an orange. A superb series of period photos accompanies this most interesting article.
Of course, there is much more, but I will not spoil another fine edition by telling all. You will need to get your own copy and I have to say you will not be disappointed. As always, the large A4 format allow for some superb and large photographs, something I know we all have come to appreciate. Like the earlier LIF books, this one is dual English/German and is not only interesting but informative as well. There is delight in every page, making this book one that you simply have to get.
