Probably one of the more glamerous WWII vessels was the PT boat. These small boats were constructed mostly of wood and packed quite a punch. Useful for interdiction of coastal traffic as well as fighting larger warships, the PT boat brings forth images of high speed torpedo runs against overwhelming odds. At least that is the Hollywood version of things. The real battles waged by these ships was mostly against enemy coastal traffic with the occasional foray against larger targets. Thanks to their high speed of 40 knots or more and the ever growing size of deck guns, they were very effective.
In this new book by Squadron Publications, we get to look at the lone surviving Elco 80 PT boat, probably the most produced version of the war. As part of their color 'On Deck' series, we get to peer into every compartment and look at all the systems that were part of these small, but powerful boats. One thing I did learn is that these were not made of plywood as I'd always thought. Instead, it was two cross over layers of mahogany planks that made up the outer hull, with that covered by a canvas outer skin to provide smoothness.
The book starts with a brief history of the type and then, through the use of period photos, some in color, shows us some of the overall images of the construction and operations of these boats. This then goes into a look at the various sections and systems, using both period photos and color images of the surviving example. There are also a page with a couple of color profiles showing some of the more used camouflage schemes.
In all, it makes for not only a great read, but a detailed look at one of the most important fast boats every built and used in combat. A great reference for the enthusiast and modeler alike. One I can easily recommend to you.
