The latest in RAF-in-Combat's series on WWII RAF squadrons concentrates on the use of the Mustang III (P-51B) in Italy and the Balkans by RAF and Commonwealth forces. The type was popular in service, though by the time it replaced the previous Hurricanes and Kittyhawks, the enemy air presence was pretty much gone. However, they did prove to be fairly effective in the escort and ground attack role

The book covers three main units that were able to operate the type in combat. these were 3 Squadron RAAF, 5 Squadron RSAF, and 249 Squadron RAF. Among the three units, there was only one confirmed air to air victory. Two other units were converting from the Kittyhawk and did fly the type, though they did not see combat with them. Those are 250 Squadron RAF, and 450 Squadron RAAF.

This book follows the usual format  with a brief history of the type then the more extensive history of the units themselves. There's the usual information on victory and tables of losses as well as some great period photos and the usual number of superb full color profiles of aircraft used by these units.

Thanks to all the well done research and choice of illustrations, it makes for a superb addition to the series and its reasonable price is one that should appeal to many. These do make for great references for the fans of the RAF.
