This is part of Periscopio's 'Great Battles of the World' series and covers the events leading up to and after El Alamein in 1942. The book covers not only the battle itself, but also has sections that look at the various armor, aircraft and uniforms that were used during this period of time and at this place. Each of the various sections was authored by someone different, providing an interesting look at more than just the fighting itself.

It seems that Periscopio is trying to compete with Osprey in this area. The books are about the same size in physical dimensions as well as in page count to the 'Campaign' series. Where this book differs is in providing these additional sections as mentioned earlier. Each one of these has a number of very nicely drawn profiles and/or color illustrations to go along with it. An additional section on the actions of the 1st Greek Infantry Brigade as part of the 8th Army is included to provide some interest and appeal to Greek readers. The book also provides a section on what the battle area is like today and what can be seen by visitors. A final section is on the part played by intelligence and the ability of the Allies to intercept German coded transmissions.

An interesting comment was made in the book that I've not really thought about, but it is quite true. El Alamein was the last military victory for Britain on its own as a major world power.

All of this is accompanied by superb period photos, some of them in color and some of them new to this reviewer. The addition of the profiles in various sections is also a major draw (no pun intended), and something that I think adds a great deal to this volume.

It is a book that I am sure you will enjoy reading and going through as much as I did and one that I can highly recommend to you.
