One of their most releases in MMP's Single series highlights the Lockheed P-38G Lightning. The L version was featured in #13, but this is an earlier variant and there are quite a few differences. The G was one of the types first sent into combat along with the F. In Europe, the aircraft suffered from high altitude engine detonation, a feature that was never really fixed. However, this was not an issue in the Pacific where the plane operated at lower altitudes and its twin engines were a major safety factor when operating over water. The aircraft also had good range and was used fairly successfully as a bomber escort in the SWPA. Its combat abilities were also good against what the Japanese offered as opposition, witnessed by the fact the the two top scoring US aces flew the aircraft in the Pacific.  Later variants eclipsed this version fairly quickly and were produced in much greater numbers.

In line with the other releases, this one is in the large A4 size with several distinct sections. There is no history of the type, but there are superbly done plans in both 1/48 and 1/72 scale. This includes fuselage cross sections that are often missing from other plans. The book includes a goodly number of photos showing both the entire aircraft and some details. A real plus to this are a number of illustrations from the airframe manuals. The book finishes up with large, full page color views of an in-service example along with a detailed page covering the instrument panel.

It is another great addition to the MMP family of books that offers all that both the modeler and the enthusiast are seeking in a plans/detail book on a specific aircraft without going into a ton of detail. I did learn a few things from this book that I'd not known before and I consider myself fairly well versed on the aircraft. It is a book that I found to be well done and one that I can highly recommend to you.
