If you can believe it, this is the 184th aircraft in Action book done by squadron. Pretty unbelievable when you consider that they have been producing these in basically the same format since 1971. This isn't the first time the He-111 has been featured as in Action # 6 was also on this aircraft. Back then, the series did not do such a great job of going over the differences of every sub-type as it does today. Those old in Action books were more a collection of photographs taken from the Bundesarchiv. Of course, it has become rather difficult to find and it really was time for an updated version. Because of the amount of material, there are 8 extra pages included in this edition bringing the page total up to 58.
As with other in Action titles, this is basically a primer on the type. It covers the entire range of 111s from the initial prototype of 1935 to the final versions to see action in 1945. As with others in this series, the book is broken down into subtypes with all of the differences between the newer version and the older one brought out in the write-up and in drawings/profiles. I find it a bit odd that there is but a brief mention and no images of the Hispano built, Merlin powered versions as these are the ones that lasted the longest, flying well into the 1960s.
Though it is called in Action only a short 5 page section at the end covers the aircraft in service; most of that photographs and most of those photos new to this reviewer. There is also the usual center section with 10 full color profiles of the different variants in a number of camouflage schemes. Despite my comment on the shortness of the service section, the real reason I have bought every one of these in Action titles since their inception is because of the huge number of photographs and the clear explanation of the different sub-types. Most of we who model aircraft will eventually get to the point that we want our creations to be a close to the real one as time, our skill and inclination will provide.
This is yet another Squadron book that I can highly recommend to those who are just getting interested in the type and to those who want a ready reference for an upcoming model. bChalk up another super addition to an already legendary series.
