The
German Army pioneered the development and use of Sturmartillerie, a form of
tracked fighting vehicle that was particularly effective. Initially developed as
the Sturmgeschutz, which was an infantry support vehicle, it evolved into a key
anti-tank weapons. All of these various vehicles were based on extant tank
chassis. These vehicles were generally quite low to the ground as they did not
have a turret. This allowed them to be used in ambush circumstances.
Now not all vehicles in this category were low to the ground as many were self propelled artillery or anti-tank guns set atop extant chassis. For many of these, they used captured tank chassis, freeing their turrets to be used in fixed defensive ground positions.
This book is as much a picture book as it is a history of the various vehicles. The quality of the images is generally quite good and includes some period color photos. It includes not only info on the vehicles themselves, but also on the crews of these vehicles and the uniforms these crewmen wore. Interspersed within the pages are single page vignette features of various vehicles, units or other aspects. This is a feature of this series and I like it.
Overall it makes for an interesting read and a great initial introduction to the subject. Well worth picking up.
