Hitler
had no real liking for Soviets. He thought that communism was an abomination and
the nation was full of 'subhumans'. Actually, he felt that non-Aryans all pretty
much fit into that category. It was part of the standard fascist playbook where
there are 'others' upon which to focus the hate of followers. It is all part of
the reason why the Soviet Union was invaded in mid 1941.
Fomenting war against the Soviets was probably the downfall of the Hitler regime as it spread very thin his limited number of troops and equipment. One does have to wonder how things would have turned out if this hadn't happened. Perhaps it was inevitable, but we will never know. What we do know is that the majority of the German Army was focused on war in the east.
This book covers that war from the start to the finish. It isn't the first book to do so, but what makes this one desirable is that it is chock full of photographs. Not just any photos, but every one is a period color image. The Germans were not the only ones to take color photos, but they were the most proficient and there are more period color images from Germans than anyone else. These are not simply colorized black and white photos, but the real deal. The authors have done a superlative job of finding and compiling the images for this book, providing a history of the eastern front that is fairly unique. You have not only a well written history, but a superb collection of period color images. I very much enjoyed reading this one and browsing through the hundreds of images provided in this volume. Highly recommended.
