This addition to the Images of War series highlights operations of German tanks and armor during WWII. The book is divided into several sections that cover various parts of the war efforts against Leningrad. It starts with the initial battle against Leningrad in 1941, when Army Group North reached the suburbs of Leningrad. Then, due to having fought long and hard in the months before, the advance ground to a halt. The Germans had lost troops and equipment during that time and were not strong enough to finish things.

Next are the battles of 1942-43 where the Soviets were able to regroup some and push against the surrounding German forces. The third chapter covers the Leningrad-Novgorod campaign were the Soviets were able to finally push through the siege. This was the start of the end for the Germans in this sector, who had been considerably weakened by the withdrawal of forces to other sectors of the front. In fact, it can be argued that had not Hitler removed units during the initial push, that Leningrad would have fallen, but that is all speculation. There is also a section on the aftermath of the siege as well as an appendix on the Soviet and German order of battle.

As with other books in this series, it is mostly a photo book. There is a historical introduction into each section that consists of 3-5 page so you get an idea of what was going on during that period of time. Then there are the images. A fair amount of information is provided in the captions of each image. It is fortunate for us that German photo units were taking a lot of photographs during this time so that we have such a complete record. This makes for an excellent book on the subject and one I know will be appreciated by armor fans and modelers alike. Very much recommended.
