What we
have is the third book in the IOW's Tanks and Armor series. This one
concentrates on the battle of Kursk. It was here, in 1943 that the attacking
Soviets managed to create a large salient that the Germans hoped would allow
them to cut off a very large number of troops, something that would definitely
be a plus for the backing up German Army.
It was also this battle that saw the introduction of some new equipment, including the Panther medium tank and the Elefant tank destroyer. This latter vehicle was built on the unused chassis of Tiger tanks and carried the powerful 88mm gun, which was arguably the best of its type developed during the war.
As with other books in this series, it is mostly a photo book. There is a historical introduction into each section that consists of 3-5 page so you get an idea of what was going on during that period of time. Then there are the images. This one concentrates on armor and tanks so there isn't any 'fluff' included. A fair amount of information is provided in the captions of each image. It is fortunate for us that German photo units were taking a lot of photographs during this time so that we have these available. The Soviets were no slouch in this regard so this one includes a considerable number of Soviet vehicles. This makes for an excellent book on the subject and one I know will be appreciated by armor fans and modelers alike. Very much recommended.
