A
very nice addition to Pen & Sword's 'Images of War' series is this on the air
campaign over Normandy. It starts off with a section of getting all the major
air commanders on the same page when it came to support for the invasion. Not
exactly an easy task as everyone seemed to have a different idea of not only how
it should be done but even whether they should participate. This latter was an
especial case with both the US and British heavy bomber people.
Next is a section on the 2nd Tactical Air Force followed by the US 8th Air Force and the Luftwaffe. These three sections cover all the aircraft types that were involved. The next section is on dealing with destroying bridges to the invasion area as well as taking care of German radar. This is followed by the actual heavy air to ground support provided on D-day and the days after. A section on the bombing of Caen and Rouen is next, culminating with the trapping of the German army at Falaise.
While each section has its historical introduction covering several pages, the main feature of this book are the photos. The selection is quite good having been chosen for clarity. It is not surprising to find stock images in books like this, but there are also those that have not been widely published. In all, it is a well done book and a great addition to this series.
