This addition to the Images of War series highlights the time between planning for the Normandy invasion until the time a few months later when the Germans had been caught in the Falaise Pocket. This includes fighting in Caen, the bocage, the capture of the Cotentin Peninsula and the liberation of Paris.

While the time span was only a few months, a considerable amount of fighting had to take place as the Germans were not simply giving up. As the defenders, they made it exceedingly difficult for the Allies to advance, despite the Allies superiority in the air and in terms of manpower and materiel.

Normally, books in this series provide a brief introduction to each section before we move on to the images. While additional information is provided with the images, this edition changes things up a bit. The introduction to each section is exceedingly brief and a lot more information has been provided with each of the photographs. Personally, I prefer this sort of approach, especially as the images seem to follow the time line of events rather than just being placed according to section description.

This, to me, makes this one of the best books in the series and with over 200 pages of images, it is a real feast for the eyes. This is a good one and if you like books of this sort, then I encourage you to pick it up.
