World War 1 was the first really technological conflict. It brought to the forefront several items which were even more developed in the years after and were paramount to the even larger conflict that came about some 20 years later. Things like the machine gun, the airplane, the use of trucks to move men and equipment, the submarine and the tank.

While the British were the first to put into widespread use, they were not the only nation to develop them. The French also made use of tanks and had a design that was smaller and different to what the British used. The Germans were not really sure if they would be useful as early British operations were not all that successful. In fact, most German tanks were those captured from the British and rebuilt into operational condition. However, Germany did develop their own armor that was a result of the A7V group. This tank was the most successful design of several and also the largest tank to be used during the war, though not built in anywhere the numbers of the British or French designs.

This latest book in the Images of War series covers the development of the tank as well as its initial use mid-war. It then goes into the German reaction and the various designs that were built before a finalized vehicle was eventually built. Then there is a section on the wartime use of the A7V. The use of captured British Mark IV tanks is also covered. This includes the efforts made to rebuild these tanks as well as their use in combat. What makes this book so useful is that there are more images of German WWI tanks than I have ever seen in one place. Undoubtedly counts for the fairly hefty page count. If WWI tanks are your passion, this is a book you simply must have. Well worth picking up.
