Peko's WW2 Photobook series has become very popular amongst armor enthusiasts over the years. This is a special edition that covers Sturmgeschutz-Abteilung 203, a unit that formed before the invasion of Russia in 1941.
This unit operated various versions of the StuG III during its history, starting with the short barreled variant. As the unit was sent back to Germany for refit during the rest of the war, they left what was left of their operational vehicles and got all new equipment before returning to the fray. Like all units that survived until the end of the war, in the last weeks, many of those were relegated to operating as infantry as their equipment broke down or was destroyed.
Typical of Peko books, this one is more than simply a history of the unit. The book is full of photos taken of the unit during its existence. This includes equipment, people, and some of their victims as well. The photos have been carefully chosen not only for image quality, but for interest as well.
What probably makes these books such a treasure is that often private collections are used to illustrate them. Such is the case with this one with few coming directly from the Bundesarchives. This book is in English which is a real plus for most of you who are reading this. It is highly readable and informative. In all it makes for an excellent choice for those who like to model the vehicle as well as those who are simply interested in the type. Most highly recommended.
