Back in October 2023, Hamsa launch a massive rocket attack from Gaza, overwhelmed an entry point, went on a killing and kidnapping spree in Israel, and fled back to Gaza. This was the largest attack on Israel by Hamas ever and outraged the Israeli population. As is always the case, the response to this was catastrophic for the Gazans.

The Israeli military started a long campaign to destroy as much of Hamas as they could and let the rest of the population do what they could to keep from being killed. Part of this was to try to get back the hostages, though that was generally unsuccessful with prisoners and bodies being returned piecemeal. In fact, the last were not returned until several years later.

The destruction in Gaza was cataclysmic. As of this writing, the devastation continues and only about 5% is not destroyed. The humanitarian crisis was exacerbated by closing all the border crossings and not letting aid get into Gaza either at all or in a trickle. The number of Gaza civilians who have perished due to the military action or lack of food, water, and medical care is huge and still rising.

In addition, Israel has chased Hamas into southern Lebanon and sections of Beruit have been bombed in order to eliminate leadership. Much of southern Lebanon is under Israeli control to stop rocket attacks on northern Israel. Israel has also taken over areas of Syria in the Golan Heights and has increased take-over of land in the West Bank.

All of this is covered in some detail in the book in a step by step look at how the various areas of conflict have progressed over time. It also covers the initial months of the war with Iran, a conflict which doesn't seem to involve Israel as much any more, but is still be waged on and off by the US. It is very well written and clearly allows the reader to follow the progression of events without getting bogged down in military jargon, an issue some books tend to have. It is a book that I can very much recommend to anyone with an interest in recent events in this area as it clears up a lot of propaganda put out by all sides of the issue.
