After the 1967 war with Israel, all of the surrounding nations were left in a less than optimum condition. Of course, this was true of Israel as well, but thanks to assistance from the US was able to get the latest and greatest in terms of aircraft. Egypt, Jordan, and Syria pretty much had to rely on the Soviet Union for weapons.
Now this was a bit of a conundrum for all nations. One is that Soviet equipment was not as good as that from Western countries in terms of quality and capabilities. The Soviets knew this and didn't want their gear coming out second best in the eyes of the world. As a result, the Soviets were a bit slow in re-equipping and they were also slow in providing sufficient ordnance.
This was a bit frustrating for Egypt as they wanted to fully rearm as quickly as possible so they could get back the territory that they had lost. This meant that there were constant incursions back and forth across the new border with Israel. Syria was less as insistent as Egypt on all regards and even less so with Lebanon, which basically wanted to just keep out of it. Jordan was under the worst situation. Many of the Palestinians who were basically kicked out of the East Bank and Gaza went into Jordan to regroup. This caused a lot of headaches for the Jordanian government. In fact, much of the focus of the Israeli military was preventing the incursions of Palestinians who were out to set road mines and cause other destruction.
This is another fine book on the Middle East conflict and an area that isn't covered as much as the wars before and after. As usual with this series there are some superb period photos and a center section of full color profiles and maps. A book that I very much enjoyed reading and one that I'm sure you will like as well.
