One of the more convoluted conflicts in the last several decades has been the Balkans War. The unrest started in the early 1990s with Slovenia deciding it no longer wanted to be part of Yugoslavia. This was a fairly bloodless affair. Next, Croatia decided to do this same. This was not bloodless and Yugoslavia fought to keep them as part of the state. The third area to leave was Bosnia-Herzegovian. This was also not bloodless and in fact was the most violent of the conflicts so far.

Much of the reason for the heavy fighting was there were three groups fighting to take over the territory. One was the Serbs. Another was the Croatians. Yet a third were the Bosnian Muslims. All through this part of the war, the amount of territory controlled by these three groups changed. For those of us who were alive during this time period and watching the news, it seems like every day there was some form of genocide against one of the various groups. Most of it seemed to be carried out by the Serbians because they had the largest portion of the armed forces involved.

This book covers the operations of the Bosnian-Serb Army during the three years of the most intensive fighting. Serbia did not want to lose this area as it was where a fairly large number of military installations were located as well as several manufacturing areas important to the Yugoslav economy.

The author has done a very good job of trying to clear up what is at first glance, a very convoluted situation. However, through the use of maps and taking the conflict in smaller, yearly sections, the flow of the war is more easily followed. Add to this the usual collection of period photos as the profiles and artwork in the center of the book, and you have an excellent reference of this important conflict.
