Here is the
next edition in a growing list of books on the War in Ukraine. Volume 9 covers
some of the most used and most useful pieces of equipment in the ground war;
Artillery. Specifically it covers Soviet designed systems from 2014 to 2026. It
shouldn't be too surprising that Ukraine has a lot of these systems as it was
once part of the Soviet Union and many of these systems were built in Ukraine.
Initially, these systems were very useful as not only did Ukraine have a lot of them, but they also had a fairly large stock of ammunition for these guns.However, as the war dragged on, and allies sent newer equipment, all that new equipment was a different size in terms of ammunition. NATO uses 155mm shells in its large artillery while most of Ukraine's large artillery uses 152mm. This means that Ukraine had to look to ex-Warsaw Pact nations for replacement artillery and ammunition.
This book has a look at all of the appropriate towed artillery as well as self-propelled guns (SPG). It does not look at rocket artillery nor mortars. It also does not include very small artillery pieces, but concentrates on the big boys. Each systems is discussed in some depth, including any upgrades made by Ukraine as a result of war experience. The book is well written and heavily illustrated, so there are lots of nice photos that should encourage modelers and enthusiasts alike. It is a book that I very much enjoyed reading and I know you will as well.
