This is the fourth volume in Helion's histories on Berlin during the Cold War. During that time, Berlin was at times fully cut off from the rest of Germany; at others, the road, rail, and air corridors were fairly restricted and were periodically closed by the East Germans in a continuing harassment campaign.
It soon became obvious that there may well be a time when West Berlin would have to defend itself against an attack from the East. Since the city was surrounded, the only option was to base troops there. The US, Britain, and France did just that. Not only did they base troops in the city, but they also had training grounds in various locales and frequently used each other's facilities for this purpose. Few realize that there was also a small air contingent based there and that treaty allowed them to fly a short distance outside the city limits. Same with the East Germans so in that way they were able to keep an eye on each other.
This book tells the story of the various units that were operational within the city of West Berlin during the Cold War. It concentrates on US Forces. This includes not only combat units but also the rather wide variety of support units that every army requires to be effective. The book is well illustrated with maps and photos, many of the latter in full color. In addition, we have the usual center section of color profiles. At the end of the book are several organizational tables that enthusiasts will find of interest. A book that I found to be both interesting and informative. I'm positive you will feel the same and so can easily recommend it to you.
