Lately, Casemate
Publishers has been concentrating on the last months of WII on the eastern
front. For the Soviets, this edition in Casemate's popular Illustrated series
covers the last months of the war as the Red Army closes in on the German
capital, Berlin. Despite the dwindling German Army, this produced some of the
fiercest fighting of the war.
It was not easy going for the Soviets for defensive warfare very much works in favor of the defender. In particular, destroying cities by bombing and artillery makes plenty of places for defenders to set up deadly armed traps. In the favor of the attacker was an overwhelming number of troops and huge amounts of armor, artillery and ammunition. The Soviets had pretty much complete control of the skies as the Luftwaffe had been mostly grounded by lack of fuel and lack of safe airfields from which to operate. It also didn't help that the US and UK were closing in from the west.
This book is as much a picture book as it is a history of the final Soviet advance into Berlin that helped to end the war. The quality of the images is generally quite good and really adds to the story. As usual, there are small vignette articles that cover specific people or equipment to add some spice to the overall product. These small articles are a feature that I really like about this series. In all, it all makes for a great read and provides Well worth picking up.
