Undoubtedly the premier armored force at the beginning of 1939 was that of the German Army. Not that the French or the British or the Soviets did not have a formidible armored force, but their equipment was not designed for nor their troops trained for the type of warfare that they saw in 1939/40. Despite not having modern tanks until just a few years prior and in many cases lacking in firepower and protection, the German Army had trained well for precisely the type of fast moving warfare for which they became famous. Their adversaries were still mind-set into the lessons of WWI which put them at a disadvantage tactically and the results showed it.
This book cover the German Panzerwaffe and divides itself into several distinct sections. These include the training of the soliders who operated the tanks, the units into which these vehicles were placed, and the tanks themselves. There are also sections on mobility, tactics, and what it was like for the crewmen in the field. Each section includes the way these features changed as the war progressed for things were often quite different at the beginning of the war compared to near the end.
As is the norm for this series, there are a lot of period photos, some in color, as well as color profiles and art work along with charts and small vignette features that concentrates on items of interest. This all makes for a well rounded and easy to read book for the historian and enthusiast as well. It is a book that I know you will find worth picking up.
