Those who study warfare realize that what wins battles is not troops or equipment, but it is logistics. If an army cannot keep equipment coming, cannot bring in reinforcements, or bring in food, then the odds of being successful and moving forward decreases dramatically. It is not surprising that out of Dwight Eisenhower's five things that helped win WWII, three of them were modes of transportation (C-47, Jeep, LVCP).

Germany started the war somewhat unprepared for war. However, its invasions were not a long distance from the industrial might so it was fairly easy to move supplies to the front lines. Then the front lines got a long way away in North Africa and deeper into the Soviet Union. This increased the distance that supplied had to be transported. Unfortunately, Germany did not concentrate all that much on airplanes, ships and trucks to move equipment. On top of that, most of the German cargo transports moved on four legs and ate oats and hay. Eventually, things fell apart and we know of the result.

This book initially covers what strategic and operational logistics are and how they are important to an army. Then it goes into land methods of moving supplies which includes various truck and, of course, horses. Also in the book are methods of aerial supply and seaborne supply. Typical of the series, the book is chock full of period photographs as well as small vignette sections that focus on specific aspects. It is a super addition to the series and a very interesting read.

In all, it is another superb edition in this series and one that I am sure you will find as interesting and enjoyable as did I.
