The MiG-29 was developed by the Soviet Union as an equal to the USAF's F-15 Eagle. Typical of modern aircraft, the development time was fairly long, but by the time that the Soviet Union fell, the type had been service for a decent amount of time. The aircraft was still being used by most Warsaw Pact nations as well as some other Soviet-friendly nations.

With the fall of the Soviets, some of the stability of nations around the region deteriorated, though the first one to use the type in rather one-sided combat was Iraq during Desert Storm in 1991. It was also used in the former Yugoslavia during the end of the century as well as in a number of arab nations during the 'Arab Spring' time period. Its most recent use has been in Ukraine during the Russian invasion of that nation. Though no longer a cutting edge aircraft, it has performed admirably in the missions it has been given. Not surprising is that a fair number have been lost both in operational situations and due to accidents. These aircraft are at the end of their service life and lack of spares and the sort of in-depth these planes require has been a factor. Still, the MiG-29 is part of the front line equipment of a number of the world's air forces.

Mike Guardia is an excellent researcher and story teller. He has produced a book that is eminently readable and provides insights into the combat operations of this aircraft and its pilots. In fact, quite a fair amount of the book concentrates on the pilots and the missions that they flew in combat. It all makes for a well rounded book and one that I know you will enjoy.
