HISTORY

The innovative design of the Me P.1111 was completed in January 1945, and was intended as an improvement to the Messerschmitt P.1110 Ente.

The Messerschmitt P.1111 was an 8.92 m-long tailless airplane with nearly delta-shaped wings, swept back at a 45-degree angle, and a wingspan of 9.12 m. It was equipped with a pressurized cockpit for a single pilot. The planned powerplant was a Heinkel HeS 011 turbojet engine, and armament was to be four 30 mm MK 108 cannon.

During a design review comparison conference in Oberammergau on February 27 and 28, 1945, the P. 1111 fared outstanding in the area of performance in high-speed flight capability, take-off, climb and landing performance. The experts held the opinion that these qualities demonstrated a fundamental superiority of the flying wing construction type. However, the P.1111 was ruled out due to the impossibility of protecting the fuel.

THE KIT

For all those 'luft 46 fans, we have what is a very simple kit. The parts count is minimal with 18 pieces. Construction should be quite quick. There is a plate for the cockpit that holds a seat and control stick. The upper and lower fuselage include the wings so no alignment issues. The instructions suggest nose weight but don't indicate how much is needed. Note that it would be a good idea to install a blanking plate or two as you can see light side to side from the intakes.

The fin/rudder is a single piece that slots in place. Landing gear are very generic and rather featureless. Gear doors are separate and the main inner doors will need to be cut free of the outer ones. A single, rather thick, canopy then sits atop the cockpit opening.

Instructions are adequate for the build and provide a scheme in 81/82/76 with lots of fuselage mottling. Of course, you can paint it any way you deem appropriate. The decal sheet only includes wing insignia and a swastika that is divided into four sections. I'd hit the decal spares box as these have already started to yellow somewhat.

CONCLUSIONS

The heyday of 'luft 46 has passed us by, but there are still kits out there that can be built and they are a great way to stretch your imagination someone. It is also a great way to confound the farbpolizei.
