HISTORY

The Ilyushin Il-2 (Cyrillic Илью́шин Ил-2) was a ground-attack aircraft (Shturmovik) in the Second World War, produced by the Soviet Union in very large numbers. In combination with its successor, the Ilyushin Il-10, a total of 42,330 were built, making it the single most produced military aircraft design in all of aviation history, as well as one of the most produced piloted aircraft in history along with the American postwar civilian Cessna 172 and the Soviet's own Polikarpov Po-2 biplane, sometimes seen side-by-side with the big armored Ilyushin design on the front lines. The Shturmovik is regarded as the best ground attack aircraft of World War II. It was a prominent aircraft for tank killing with its accuracy in dive bombing and its guns being able to penetrate tanks' thin top armor.

To Il-2 pilots, the aircraft was simply the diminutive "Ilyusha". To the soldiers on the ground, it was the "Hunchback", the "Flying Tank" or the "Flying Infantryman". Its postwar NATO reporting name was "Bark". The Il-2 aircraft played a crucial role on the Eastern Front. Joseph Stalin paid the Il-2 a great tribute in his own inimitable manner: when a particular production factory fell behind on its deliveries, Stalin sent an angrily-worded cable to the factory manager, stating "They are as essential to the Red Army as air and bread." "I demand more machines. This is my final warning!"

THE KIT

In line with other Easy Assembly kits, Hobby Boss' IL-2 is designed with the entire lower fuselage piece also containing the wings and horizontal stabilizers. The upper fuselage has the cockpit section inserted into it. A nice feature is that the carb intake trunking is part of the cockpit section. There is also no seat for the rear gunner as he sat on a strap that was hooked from one side of the fuselage to the other.

The kit includes four rockets with their rails; two on each wing. For whatever reason, Hobby Boss decided to kit a rather unsuccessful anti-tank version which has podded 37mm cannon under the wings instead of the wing root 20mm versions.

This particular kit has more parts than many in this line so it is important to follow the instructions to be sure nothing is missed. The construction steps are well drawn so it is easy to see where it all goes. There are the usual mulitple paint references. Both options are green/brown over light blue. I am hoping that both markings options are for the big cannon marked option as they are relatively colorful as IL-2s go. One is box art plane flown by Hero of the Soviet Union, Ivan Pavlov. The other also has a patriotic slogan on the fuselage in the form of music, a white fuselage band and white fin tip.
CONCLUSIONS

These kits are often a case of you like them or you do not. They are lacking the fine detail you find with 'regular' kits, but then, sometimes we do not care about a lot of detail and just want a simple, basic build. That is what these kits are.
