THE KIT

Though you don't really think about it too much, there are not many, if any aftermarket pilot figures. At least, not many that you can actually plunk down into your kits. Seeing a need, Master Details is presenting their first in a series of pilot figures for various 1/32 aircraft kits.

The first one is for the USAF from mid 1970s to late 1990s. It come with four different head options: visor down and mask in place, visor up and mask in place, visor down and no mask, visor up and mask. The mask and hose (which yo9u can easily bend with a bit of hot water) are included separately. Those who are not good at doing faces will have a way out, while the rest of us will have a goodly number of options. In addition, there are two different arm sets, depending on what you want your pilot to be doing.

Another neat option are suit badges (shown at the right, enlarged). This includes those on the arms and the name tag and one for the chest. These decals are ALPS printed with a single carrier. It is recommended that you paint white  the area where these will be fitted for maximum clarity. A chart lists what is available.

In addition, you get a very nicely done painting guide and detailed instructions on assembling the model and what you need to do to modify the seat in which the figure will be placed. Some cutting, hacking and grinding will be needed to hollow out the seats so the figure will fit properly.

CONCLUSIONS

I think that this is a great idea. Future figures are going to be various Korean War era pilots, NATO, Russian, Chinese, as well as Axis, and Allied pilots and gunners. There are also plans for interior, ordnace and wheel well sets if things go well with the pilots. As well molded as is this one, I can't help but think that we'll be seeing more. I recommend that you pick up one (or two if you are doing F-4s) and give them a try.
