Aeromask AM72-F433: McDonnell F-4E Phantom II

Scott Van Aken

For any appropriate 1/72 F-4 kit

This particular set from Aero Mask is for the 1/72 F-4E Phantom II. There are a variety of 1/72 USAF F-4s which could use this set with the newest tooling being those of Fine Molds. However, all F-4 kits I've built have been pretty much the same size so this set woud be useful on any of those. Though this is listed as being for the F-4E, there is no reason why it shouldn't work on the C/D-model as well.

This set of masks is like their others where you don't have to dig out the mask from the backing as Aeromask has already done that for you. Each of the masks is numbered and all you need to do is to is follow the instructions. One first does the lighter green, then the dark grey, then the dark green. This set can also be used for the SEA wrap scheme, just replace the dark grey with the tan. The instructions will guide you through it.

I have used these masks before and they really stick tight. So much so that if you have not applied the paint over primer, there is a pretty good chance you'll peel up the paint when you remove the masking. When I did the Hunter, I discovered that you have to pull these off quite slowly or you'll leave a bit of residue. This residue is easy enough to pull up with Scotch tape. While you might be able to get away with no primer when spraying lacquers. But with acrylics, primer is a must.
