HISTORY

The Xian JHU-6, also known as the HY-6U, was developed to provide the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) with a dedicated aerial-refueling capability. Rather than being simply another bomber derivative, the JHU-6 represented an important change in the role of the long-serving Xian H-6, transforming the basic Tu-16-derived airframe into an aerial tanker. The development reflected the PLAAF’s growing need to extend the range and endurance of its fighter force, particularly as newer aircraft such as the J-8D began to acquire air-to-air refueling capability. The tanker was publicly revealed during the National Day parade in Beijing on October 1, 1999.

The JHU-6 was based on the Chinese-built H-6 but was considerably different in mission and equipment. The most significant change was the conversion of the aircraft from a bomber into a dedicated tanker. The HY-6U/JHU-6 had its Type 244 radar and associated fire-control system removed, eliminating equipment that was no longer required for its new role. In their place, the aircraft was fitted with the equipment necessary for aerial refueling, including underwing refueling pods and associated plumbing and control systems. This allowed the JHU-6 to transfer fuel to compatible PLAAF aircraft in flight and significantly increase their operational radius.

The introduction of the JHU-6 was particularly significant because it gave the PLAAF an indigenous tanker capability at a time when China was beginning to place much greater emphasis on long-range air operations. Its ability to refuel fighters in the air reduced their dependence on forward air bases and allowed aircraft to remain on station for longer periods. The tanker was therefore an important force multiplier, even though the relatively limited fuel capacity of the H-6 airframe restricted the amount of fuel that could be transferred during a single mission. Nevertheless, the JHU-6 provided the PLAAF with a practical aerial-refueling capability using an aircraft already well established in Chinese service.

The JHU-6 should also be distinguished from the earlier HY-6. The original HY-6 retained the H-6's PV-23 fire-control system and could therefore still perform a secondary missile-carrying role, whereas the HY-6U/JHU-6 was configured as a dedicated tanker with the fire-control system and Type 244 radar deleted. 

The JHU-6 thus occupies an interesting place in the long evolution of the H-6 family. Built around an airframe whose origins went back to the Soviet Tu-16 of the 1950s, the JHU-6 demonstrated how effectively the Chinese aviation industry could adapt the basic H-6 design to entirely new missions many decades after its original conception.

THE KIT

Trumpeter entered the 1/72 Tu-16 Badger market around 2000 with a range of versions of this large and impressive Soviet-designed bomber and its Chinese-built derivatives. Not long afterward, the company followed these releases with the much less common tanker version, the Xian JHU-6, adding new tooling to convert the basic airframe into a dedicated aerial-refueling aircraft. It may not be the most familiar member of the Badger family, but the JHU-6 is certainly an important and, for the modeler, refreshingly esoteric subject.

This particular kit was bought new from one of my beloved Athens hobby shops sometime around 2018. As I remember it, it was offered as a special deal for just €25, which was quite a bargain for what you get in this large box. The kit comes in Trumpeter's usual big, sturdy, high-quality, top-opening box, with attractive artwork depicting a JHU-6 tanker refueling a J-8 fighter.

Upon opening the box, I was greeted by no fewer than 224 parts, arranged on nine light-gray styrene sprues. Most of these are common to the bomber versions, while two smaller sprues contain the additional tanker-specific equipment.

It should be stressed, however, that not all 224 parts are required for the tanker. Because Trumpeter has sensibly based the JHU-6 on its existing H-6 tooling, quite a few parts are intended for the bomber versions and are left unused here. This is perfectly normal for a kit representing a member of an aircraft family and, of course, provides the modeler with a useful collection of spare parts. 

All the parts are individually packaged, and the quality of the packaging is absolutely superb. Bravo, Trumpeter! Everything is securely protected, with the sprues and more delicate components safely separated. The first impression when opening the box is therefore an excellent one.

Molding is also very good throughout. Panel lines are finely recessed, crisp and consistent, and the surface detail is particularly pleasing for a 1/72 scale model of this size. There is no flash on the parts examined. I did notice, however, a few ejector-pin marks in less convenient locations. These are not a major problem, since many will be hidden after assembly, but a few may require attention if they remain visible on the finished model.

The cockpit and rear crew positions are quite well appointed for the scale. They includes good-looking seats, a reasonably detailed instrument panel, control yokes and the other basic equipment necessary to produce a convincing interior. The instrument panel is designed to accept a printed film, while the seats will benefit from the supplied PE belts.

There is, however, one point that the modeler should be aware of before beginning construction. It has been reported that the cockpit sits low in the fuselage and should be positioned somewhat higher. Consequently, some adjustment or scratch-building may be necessary to raise the cockpit to a more appropriate position. Fortunately, relatively little of this area will ultimately be visible through the clear transparencies, so this is not something that should discourage anyone from building the kit. Nevertheless, it is worth knowing about before the fuselage is closed.

The engines have a very good external shape and are nicely represented on the outside. Internally, however, there is a considerable shortcut. Although some exhaust detail is provided, there are neither any forms of intakes , nor any compressor faces and the interiors are essentially empty. Trumpeter does provide intake covers, which conveniently conceal the problem if the modeler chooses to display the aircraft with the covers fitted.

If, however, you intend to leave the engine intakes open, some improvisation will be necessary. At the very least, I would suggest adding a basic compressor face or some internal structure to avoid looking directly into a completely empty nacelle. This is not a difficult improvement for the experienced modeler, but it is something that should be considered before assembly.

Landing gear is very nicely done, with good detail, beefed up by the supplied PE, especially considering the scale. The components are crisply molded and should produce a quite convincing undercarriage.

Trumpeter also provides separate ailerons, elevators and rudder, allowing the modeler to position the control surfaces dynamically if desired. For a normally parked aircraft, of course, the neutral position would probably be the most appropriate.

The refueling equipment additional sprues are well done, and a couple of access ladders are also included.

The transparencies are very nicely molded and commendably clear, with well defined framing. Instructions are typical of Trumpeter and come in the form of a 12-page booklet, including a sprue map, a color chart and the construction sequence spread over 19 steps. The drawings are generally clear and concise, with the parts identified sufficiently well to make following the assembly sequence straightforward. Color codes are provided throughout the instructions, which is useful during both construction and painting.

The basic construction sequence is logical, although I would not consider it compulsory. The modeler can sensibly alter several stages to make construction easier and to reduce the possibility of damaging delicate parts. The nose landing gear, for example, could easily be left until considerably later in the build rather than being installed as early as the instructions suggest.

Trumpeter provides one marking option, for aircraft 43595, based at Leiyang Air Base, Guangzhou. Decals are nicely printed and expected to work well. The suggested finish is silver over white, with the color references given in Gunze Sangyo codes and in generic form.

There is, however, an interesting point concerning the suggested colors. From the research I have carried out and from the photographic references and reports I have consulted, I am not entirely convinced that the upper surfaces of this particular JHU-6 were actually silver. The references I have found lean towards light gray as the upper color, and I have even come across overall gray schemes.

Consequently, Trumpeter's silver recommendation should perhaps be treated with a little caution. My own feeling is that a light-gray upper surface may be more appropriate for this particular aircraft, but the evidence does not appear sufficiently conclusive for me to state that as an absolute fact. As always, I recommend that the modeler do his own research before committing the model to paint.

Construction begins with the cockpit, which is trapped between the upper and lower forward fuselage sections. The central internal section, corresponding to the weapons/bomb-bay area of the bomber versions, is then assembled. For the tanker, Trumpeter has you assemble and install this internal structure as part of the fuselage.

The engines follow. As mentioned earlier, the external engine components are good, but the intake interiors are completely empty because no compressor faces are provided. If you do not intend to use the supplied intake covers, this is the point at which some additional work should be considered.

The instructions then move to the main landing gear and the rear crew compartment. The two gun turrets are assembled, together with the rear crew area and the other internal components. These assemblies, along with the front wheel bay, are subsequently trapped between the fuselage halves.

The modeler should also remember to install approximately 50 grams of nose weight in the forward fuselage to prevent the completed aircraft from sitting on its tail. This is essential with a model of this configuration.

The engines are then attached, followed by the wings and their associated components. The instructions next deal with the lower fuselage details and the bomb-bay doors. Since this is a tanker rather than a bomber, the modeler should pay attention to exactly which components are required for the JHU-6 configuration. Some of these parts are inherited directly from the bomber tooling.

The nose landing gear is also shown being installed during construction, while the main landing gear follows later. Personally, I would postpone both as far as practical. Installing such delicate components early in the build only increases the chances of breaking them or interfering with subsequent sanding, filling and painting.

One of the more challenging stages comes when the completed forward fuselage section, containing the cockpit, has to be joined to the rear fuselage. This is probably the most demanding part of the entire assembly. The forward fuselage is engineered as upper and lower sections, while the rear fuselage is divided into left and right halves. Bringing these differently engineered assemblies together inevitably creates a potentially awkward joint, and some fit problems should be expected. Careful dry-fitting, patient adjustment and plenty of attention will be required to achieve a clean result here. It is certainly not beyond the capabilities of the average modeler, but it is not a stage to rush.

The tailplanes are then attached, together with various smaller components, some of which appear to be specific to the tanker version. The wing fuel assemblies and other external details follow, along with the main landing gear. Finally, the smaller items such as antennas, fillets, access details and the supplied boarding ladders are added, bringing the construction to completion.

Overall, the build is not extremely difficult, but it does present a certain degree of challenge. The relatively high number of parts is one factor, while the engineering of the forward and rear fuselage sections makes achieving a good fit particularly important. The use of photo-etched parts, where applicable, also adds another small degree of complexity.

CONCLUSIONS

This is a great kit of an important and fascinating aircraft. Frankly speaking, it is quite astonishing that we can have a mainstream 1/72 scale kit of the Chinese JHU-6 tanker. Trumpeter deserves considerable credit for taking on such an unusual and rather esoteric subject. The JHU-6 is certainly not an aircraft that one encounters every day on a model show table, and the fact that it is available in this scale and at such an accessible price is quite remarkable.

The kit itself is a very nice offering, with good detail throughout, especially for the scale. The detailed cockpit does require some attention, as the modeler should raise it slightly to achieve the correct position, but this is a straightforward modification for a modeler with some experience. The landing gear is very nicely done, while the engines have good external shapes, even though the omission of compressor faces and other internal structure is less favorable. Fortunately, this is something that can be remedied without too much difficulty if the intakes are to be left open.

The finely recessed panel lines are another good  point, and molding is generally very good and crisp, although there are a few ejector-pin marks here and there. The use of photo-etched parts can further enhance the finished model, particularly in the crew areas with details such as seat belts, the landing gear, but also on the exterior where the finer details will benefit from the added finesse.

The transparencies are nicely molded and clear, while the decals are simple and straightforward, looking perfectly adequate for the single marking option provided, and should perform well.

One point I would strongly recommend considering before painting is the color scheme. As discussed earlier, I am not convinced that silver is correct for the upper surfaces of the aircraft depicted. My research leads me to believe that gray over white is a more convincing possibility, although the available references are not entirely consistent. In any case, this is certainly something worth researching before committing the model to paint.

Out of the box, a very attractive JHU-6 can emerge, and that is perhaps the greatest compliment I can give the kit. If you want a 1/72 scale JHU-6, this is essentially the only game in town — but fortunately, it is a very good one. The kit is also offered at a remarkably reasonable price for such a large model, and the excellent packaging is an added bonus.

I would not recommend it as a first-ever 1/72 aircraft project. The construction of this big bird has a certain degree of complexity, due to the use of photo-etched parts, the need to raise the cockpit, and, most importantly, the mating of the front and rear fuselage sections. These areas will require patience, careful dry-fitting and a certain amount of modeling experience. For that reason, I would consider the kit best suited to the average to experienced modeler, rather than the absolute beginner.

For those willing to give it the attention it deserves, the rewards should be considerable. It is an unusual aircraft, a large and imposing model, and a subject that will certainly attract attention when displayed. Considering its nice detail, good overall molding, unusual subject and very reasonable price, Trumpeter's JHU-6 is a kit I can easily recommend. Out of the box, with a little care and perhaps a few modest improvements, a really impressive Chinese tanker can emerge — and for me, that makes this a kit very much worth tackling.
