HISTORY
The P-51D was the later version of the WW2 era Mustang that sacrificed some agility and speed for great range, firepower and visibility. It helped break the Luftwaffe’s fighter force and allow the bombers to reach their targets deep into Germany. The Mustang D model would be sold to air forces all over the world after WW2. Those that went into civilian hands would become the basis of the warbird community and seen at air shows all over the world.
THE KIT
The
Arma kit looks like other Arma Kits in terms of parts and layout. The basic kit
comes on two sprues of grey plastic, one sprue of clear plastic, Kabuki style
tape masks as well as a decals sheet for three markings. It includes several
options like the tail fillet or the early versions without the tail fillet, two
different types of props, several different exhausts and intakes for the nose as
well as three different types of rear canopy. There is also a variety of
ordinance including paper drop tanks and the teardrop aluminum ones. Also
includes a clear stand to get the correct angle for the main landing gear.
The detail
on the parts is very fine that would more suitable for a 1/48 scale kit. It is
not as detailed as the comparable Eduard 1/72 Mustang, but it has enough for
most modelers.
The decal sheet has three different options for the P-51D. One is the late Bud Anderson’s OLD CROW from the 357th FG, Jack Ilfrey’s markings from the 20th Fighter Group and the last one a set of markings of Janusz Franckiewicz from the RAF’s famous 303 (Polish) squadron.
Unlike previous Arma kits, I didn’t purchase this one with specials, but there is a QR code to allow you to download a .stl file and personal license so one can print the extra details if you have access to a 3D printer.
CONCLUSIONS
The Arma P-51D looks like another winner from Arma Hobby. It is designed on the same principle as their previous kits. Enough good details to stand out, but still relatively simple to build and paint (with some fiddly details.)
