The AMI decided to lease 24 Tornado ADVs from the RAF for a 10-year period, to cover the gap before the service entry of the Eurofighter.
The Tornados were assigned to two groups: 21º Gruppo of 53º Stormo based at Cameri in northern Italy, and 12º Gruppo of 36º Stormo based at Gioia del Colle in the south.
In 1999 the AMI decided to concentrate all the Tornado ADVs at Gioia del Colle near Bari. This position is more strategic than Cameri, close to Novara, in consideration to the political situation in the former Yugoslavia.
The Tornado ADVs were completely reconditioned to Stage One Plus (Stage 1+) configuration, and the leasing contract also includes the supply of the radar-guided BAe SkyFlash missile.
