The Blue Angels. The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. Two of the most recognizable names in aviation, so they don’t even need an introduction.

This sheet contains all the markings necessary to do one of the seven F-4’s flown during the 1969 season, the teams first with the Phantom. There are two different types of instruction sheets out there, the first being a b&w sheet, & the other one being a nearly identical sheet printed in blue ink. The blue printed sheet has pictures showing the modified front & rear instrument panel, throttle handles, & ejection seat harness particular to the team’s a/c. Both sheets have a large left profile, and underside drawing, along with two smaller tail section drawings, to show decal placement. None of the decals are numbered, but that should not be a problem. The plane’s tail number, Buno, & pilots name are on a small table to the right of the drawings.

The painting and finishing notes point out special areas such as the natural metal colors, and the non-standard (!) painting of some of the landing gear doors. Also included are instructions on how to get the proper "Blue Angel Blue" shade using two shades of Testors blue paint. The gloss yellow areas on the wingtips, stabilizer tip, & fin cap have to be painted by the modeler.

The decals themselves are on one sheet. The underside stripe is a seven-piece affair, with the two-piece squadron crest being the only other multipart decal. Both of the large under wing U.S.NAVY decals have to be applied over tacked-in-place main gear doors, allowed to dry, & cut with a sharp blade.

The color of the decals on the sheet seems a bit on the dark side. I recall reading an article where the modeler used 2 sets of theses decals to correct the bleed through of the blue color when applied to the model. I bought a second set of these decals, which is why I have both types of instructions.

Another winning sheet from Yellowhammer, & recommended to all my fellow Phantom phreaks!
