Mig Killers

When you get down to it, its what every fighter pilot wants. A Mig kill. To join the elite few who have attained that status among your peers. This sheet is about the aircraft they used to attain that status.

The instruction sheet consists of a full-page front & back with several full & partial line drawings of the a/c. Most of the drawings are of the left profile of the a/c, with 2 smaller overhead views for decals placement. Under each a/c, there is a brief description of the Mig killing mission, including the date, pilots & RIO’s name, aircraft call sign, weapons load out, and notes on the aircraft markings & colors and, of course, the Mig kill markings applied to the aircraft after the mission, with the modeler also having the choice to do the aircraft before the mission

There are markings for six aircraft, two from each squadron. The markings that make up the differences in a/c are the modexes, & Mig kill markings. One set of common markings & national insignia are provided. No maintenance stenciling is provided.

The first aircraft covered is VF-92 "Silver Kings" from its Mig killing mission of May 1972. The kill marking for this a/c is a silhouette of a Mig-21 on the splitter plate. All other markings are standard.

The first aircraft is an F-4J from the well-known VF-31 "Tomcatters", with its familiar Felix the Cat squadron badge. This unit is also the only U.S. unit to score air-to-air victories in WW II, Korea, & Viet Nam, as represented here. The tail surface decals are of the multi piece construction, with the black tail codes going over the red fin flash, which has the white shadowing already printed on it. The fuselage check mark is also of this construction. Refer to the instruction text for use of the yellow discs that goes under the Felix badge, for it was almost worn entirely away on one of the a/c. The kill marking for this a/c was a silhouette of a Mig-21 superimposed over a red star on the bottom of the splitter plate. All other markings are standard.

The final aircraft is from VF-103 "Sluggers", who were paired together with VF-31 for that deployment. The Mig kill for this aircraft is similar to the VF-31 marking, but with the incorporation of a white AIM-7 Sparrow missile. All other markings are standard.

VF-92 was decommissioned in 1975. VF-31 & 103 transitioned to the F-14 and fly the D & B versions respectively
