One of
the most iconic aircraft of the Cold War era, the Phantom is well-loved by
and easily available for modelers. There are no shortage of different
options for units, eras, and countries operating these jets, including
colorful options applied during the United States bicentennial period in
1976. Two Navy F-4Ns are the subject of this sheet which was produced many
years ago.
The first option is a colorful VF-151 example serving aboard the USS Midway, now a museum ship in San Diego. Option two is a Midway sister squadron, VF-161. Both options look like they would turn into strikingly beautiful planes with colors rarely seen on modern day Navy aircraft.
Overall the planes follow the standard ‘70s Navy color scheme of gull gray upper surfaces and white undersides, with the special red, white and blue bicentennial markings applied.
F-4N kits in 1/72 are available from Fujimi, Fine Molds and Hasegawa.
Note: Back about 35 years ago, your editor used the VF-151 markings from this sheet on a Fujimi F-4N and I have to say I was pleased with the results. Ed.
