REVIEWER: David Traill
NOTES: Units: 4th, 23rd (two options), 36th, 49th TFWs

Republic Aviation’s F-105 Thunderchief series were big, nuclear-capable single-seat fighter bombers introduced in the late 50s that ultimately served in large numbers in Vietnam. Huge losses of these planes led to their removal from combat operations but later variants would serve until the mid-80s, notably in the Wild Weasel roles flown by modified two-seat aircraft.

This sheet offers 5 decal options for single-seat F-105Ds, the most common variant produced. All five are “natural metal,” meaning no need to get fancy with camouflage options. No national insignia (roundels) are supplied, meaning you will need to raid your spares box or use kit-supplied decals to match the original aircraft. Not as many standard stencils are offered as other sheets (such as Superscale 72-390), but you could reasonably expect to get several planes represented using what is available on this sheet with that caveat.

The first example is from the 4th TFW from Seymour Johnson AFB. Two different choices are offered for planes from Kansas’ McConnell AFB, one each from the 561st and 562nd TFS belonging to the 23rd TFW. Spangdahlem’s 49th TFW is represented by choice 4, and Bitburg’s 36th TFW rounds out the options on this sheet.

Kit wise, you have choices of F-105Ds in 1/72 from Trumpeter, Hasegawa and Revell.
