Weathering model aircraft is probably the most controversial aspect of the building process. Most model builders have distinct opinions on what constitutes realistic weathered finishes on both their own and other peoples model aircraft, We have all seen model finishes with simulated paint chipping, staining, and fading applied so heavily that the weathering overwhelms every other aspect of the model and/or panel lines so enhanced that the model appears to have a grid superimposed over it. I personally think such weathering looks out of scale, but readily acknowledge that some subtle and skillfully applied weathering may result in a more realistic appearance. Whatever opinions you hold on the subject, An Initiation to the Aircraft Weathering provides a comprehensive step by step guide to applying every type of weathering likely to be found on aircraft of all types and eras.

In twelve chapters, An Initiation to the Aircraft Weathering thoroughly describes the tools, techniques, and process used to apply weathered finishes on scale model aircraft. Not surprising is that Mig products are used throughout. The chapter breakdown is as follows:

 Concepts

Tools and Products

Airframe Preparation

Cockpits

Distressed paint, camoflages, and base coats

Faded Markings

Metal Chipping and Distressed Top Coats

Winter chipping, White Wash

Dirty Top Coats

Battle damage

Final Weathering; Dirt, Oil, Muck, Smoke, Grime

Finally there is the building of the Kittyhawk OV-10A Bronco “Death Punch” (This chapter covers every aspect of the build of a “what if” Kittyhawk 1/32 OV-10A kit).

Some people may find the weathering that the author applies to the models in the book to be more extreme than they would prefer on their own models, but to whatever extent you choose to weather aircraft models, this book will have coverage on how to obtain the results desired. I recommend An Initiation to Aircraft Weathering as the best single source reference on the subject.
