HASEGAWA 1/48 KIT LISTS – JAPANESE WW II AIRCRAFT PAGES

Last update: 2 August 2007 (New information is in Bold typeface)

6 Older Kits Needed: 09337, 51017, 51023, 51042, 52502, 65502/DQ202. Add MAs to skeleton kits.

2 Future Kits Needed:  09765, 09773.

Hi, I’m Tony Hodun, and this is one of five tables of Hasegawa 1/48 kit listings I’ve developed to aid you as a modeler or collector in finding the right kit to build the version you want, to fill the gaps in your collection, or to find the parts you need.  This page covers Japanese WW II Aircraft.  See the U.S./British WW II Aircraft Page for a more complete explanation of these tables. If you’ve got useful input, please contact me at hodunmisinec@cinci.rr.com , I will reply as soon as I am able.  Enjoy, and happy modeling/collecting!

Hasegawa offers more types of 1/48 Japanese WW II aircraft kits than any other manufacturer; they produce for the home market in a big way.  Some of their earliest 1/48 kits are in this section, but the majority of these molds were developed from the 1980’s to date, and feature engraved panel lines. There are five earlier 1/48 WW II era kit families with raised panel lines (all are nice building kits), and four are in this section. These include two of three ex-Mania tooled kits purchased when that firm went out of business, the Ki 27 Type 97 Fighter (Nate), and the early tooled N1K2-J Shiden KAI (George). This last is not to be confused with the newly tooled early and late N1K2-J kits issued in 2001.  (FYI, the third ex-Mania kit is the F4U-4 Corsair found in the Allied section). The other two older kits are early Hasegawa tooling for the J7W1 Shinden and for the A6M5 Type 52 Zero. Hasegawa also introduced a fully retooled A6M5 series in 2001 with engraved panel lines, not to be confused with the older A6M5s.

My thanks to Olaf Böhm, Chris Booker, Thomas Brown, Graham Causer, Fernando Jose Diaz de Sousa, Grant Elliot, Van Firth, Jennings Heilig, Mike Horrell, Jim Obermeyer, Mike Peters, Rafael Rodriguez, Martin Sazma, Paul Weinert, and Ross Whitaker for their helpful input!

Parts Tree Labeling Notes:

A – Hasegawa uses capital letter to designate each different tree, almost always molded on a tab on the tree and noted on the instructions, except for a few of the earliest kits.

b – Hasegawa uses a subletter to designate similar trees that can be produced in two or more variations using inserts (e.g. Jb is the A6M2-N fuselage tree, the two fuselage halves are modified but tree is otherwise identical to tree Ja, the A6M2/3 fuselage tree). The subletter is always molded on a tab on the tree, but may or may not be noted in the instructions.

A* - occasionally Hasegawa reuses a letter for two or more different parts trees in the same kit family, or modifies a parts tree without using a subletter.  The star (*) is my own way of noting differences between these trees (e.g, there are three different A trees in the A6M Zero family).  The star is never found on the parts tree or instruction sheet!

All versions to date share six common parts trees.

Ki43 I : 09080, 09425, 09540, and 09589 include the added parts trees with longer wingtips, cowl, canopy etc. to build Ki 43 I only. 51944 builds a Ki43 I and has added parts to motorize the prop, very neatly done.

Ki43 II : 09082, 09491, 09508, 09657, and 09728 have parts trees with different fuselage, cowl, wingtips, etc. and build the later Ki43 II only. 09634 is identical and also includes two 250 kg bombs from the Ki84 kit series.  51948 builds the same late Ki43 II and has the same added parts as 51944 to motorize the prop.  09413 is very similar to 09082 but includes earlier cowl front and smaller carb intake to build an early Ki43 II with small or large carb intake. 09467 is close to 09413, has both cowl fronts and large carb intake only.

This family covers all four Ki 44 variants. I am using the most recent research regarding the Koh, Otsu and Hei versions. Early postwar researchers believed that the 40 mm cannon equipped version was the Model II Hei, and the later MG equipped version was Model II Otsu, but this was corrected later.  The error does show up in some earlier references and some aftermarket decal sets, even recent ones.

Ki 44 I :  09182 will build the rare Ki 44 I only, also includes instructions and decals to modify the kit to build pre-production Shokis that saw combat in Burma and China with the Kingfisher Unit.

Ki 44 IIa : 09137 and 09603 build a Ki4 4 IIa (Ko = a) only.

Ki 44 IIb : 09177 and 09301 build the Ki 44 IIb (Otsu = b) with faired 40 mm wing cannon, but 09301 also includes parts to cut back cannon fairings and expose the barrel ends.

Ki 44 IIc : Both 09136, 09336, and 09531 build a Ki 44 IIc (Hei = c) only. 51020 is the Ki 44 IIc kit with a set of Jaguar resin super detail parts.

Ki 44 IIa and IIc : Both 09194 and 09711 include the parts to build either the IIa or IIc version.
