HISTORY |
The Tank, Infantry, Mk IV (A22) was a heavy British infantry tank used in the Second World War, best known for its heavy armour, large longitudinal chassis with all-around tracks with multiple bogies, and its use as the basis of many specialist vehicles. It was one of the heaviest Allied tanks of the war. This series of tanks was named after Winston Churchill, who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Minister of Defence at the time, and had been involved with the development of the tank as a weapon during the First World War.
THE KIT |
Deciding to give British tanks a go, Dragon has created a very nicely detailed kit of one of the least aesthetically pleasing tanks of WWII, the Churchill. Though marketed in the Armor Pro series, this kit is devoid of photo etch, much to the delight of some who do not like this material.
The kit does include Dragon's excellent DS tracks. Thanks to including the bogies as part of the side suspension pieces and having the return rollers hidden under the rather ungainly looking skirts, all of that seam removal and painting of what would be a multitude of small parts is no longer an issue. In fact, in terms of parts count, this one is quite reasonable with only 65 in the final count. The turret and main gun are nicely done with the end of the barrel indented. There are two different barrel options with only the ends being slightly different. With the skirts an integral part of the upper hull, it shouild make for a fairly quick build.
Instructions are typical of Dragon and include one set of markings. These are for C Squadron, North Irish Horse, Italy, 1944 as shown on the box art.
CONCLUSIONS |
There were not all that many heavy tanks used during WWII and so it is nice to have a small scale kit of the most important British version.
