Many Bf-109s operated in areas where dust and sand were an issue. This material caused havoc on engine parts, particularly the supercharger. For that reason, a dust filter was developed that would be used on the ground and then have a clean flow once in the air. This particular set is for the Fine Molds kit and is a bit different from some others as it is molded with the front of it open. This would not be abnormal on the ground if the engine was not running as it was during take-off with aircraft in front being the main issue with dust and sand blowing around. This was used on planes in North Africa, Italy, Greece, and some parts of the Eastern Front.
