Resin for the Academy kit |
The
Academy 1/48 was touted as 'Kit of the Year' by Squadron when it first came out.
This completely ignored the fact that other than the Academy kit having engraved
panel lines, the older Monogram kit was still superior in shape. You see, the
Academy kit has a forward fuselage that is too fat and has a radome that is
misshapen. The radome can be fixed, but not the forward fuselage, at least not
without a lot of work.
As with many kits, there are a bevy of aftermarket parts available for this kit and one of them is a set of resin wheels by Wheelliant, one of the Aires group. This set has four resin tires with separate inserts for the wheels. This makes painting the wheels a lot easier. The tires also have nice raised detail on the sidewalls. Included is a section of wire for brake lines should you wish to go that route.
